Effective architecture requires the analysis of climate, site, and building performance from day one. Traditional analysis tools often fall short as they are built for engineers instead of architects, require specialised expertise, and sit outside the core design software. This turns what should be an early insight tool into a late-stage compliance hurdle.

 

At SketchUp, my goal is to democratise these tools, streamlining workflows and demystifying complex data so that architects can independently conduct early-stage analysis that meaningfully impacts design outcomes.

 

Identifying design architect’s mental models is critical in creating the intuitive SketchUp features user’s value.

An architectural design is only as good as its relationship to its surroundings. To make informed decisions about location, orientation, and form, architects need immediate access to real-world site data.

 

Add Location, SketchUp’s feature for geolocation and importing site context, was failing to meet our customers’ needs. It confused them, wasted their time, and restricted their ability to complete their jobs.

I leveraged surveys, interviews, usability testing, analytics, and A/B testing to design and roll out a feature overhaul that resolved these key friction points.

SketchUp users value its fast model creation workflow which does not require full object definition. This lack of structure, however, causes problems further down the line when the lack of explicit data impacts documentation generation, performance analysis, and export to Building Information Modelling (BIM) environments like Revit.

I led the UX for Space Finder and AI Classifier, two automation initiatives designed to detect and classify architectural elements from unstructured geometry, saving users hours of manual data entry and preventing critical downstream workflow bottlenecks.

The key challenge here was to provide experiences that enabled users to quickly validate the results of automation, otherwise the time-saving benefits of automation vanish.

Native Design was hired to define the future in-car vision for a luxury American automotive brand in the age of emerging autonomy.

 

I turned research and user insights into a strategic framework to guide design exploration. By utilising personas and journey maps, we captured shifting driver attitudes and behaviours, and used them to craft six key needs based pillars that were subsequently taken into design exploration and prototyping.

 

This was a fascinating project defined by two core challenges: How do you design user experiences for technology that doesn't even exist yet? And how do you build an actionable roadmap today for a vision 25 years in the future?

Native was hired to differentiate a client’s premium smartwatch. As design lead, I guided the team in creating a spatial interaction model to knit assistant features into a seamless UX.

Our solution was Temporal Streams: swipe left for what you missed, swipe right for what’s ahead. No messy notification lists, and no digging through menus.

Designing for a new form factor like the smartwatch at a time when the market was just taking off meant design conventions hadn’t been established. Prototyping interactions was key to ensuring our ideas really worked.

Across roles at Schematic, BT, and Native, I shaped the future of entertainment by designing next-generation TV experiences.

 

The core challenge across these projects was simplifying content discovery and creating engaging new ways to interact and watch. We leveraged modern tech to build visually rich, personalised experiences delivered seamlessly across TV, mobile, and web.

 

I enjoy the puzzle of designing remote control-driven interfaces. It takes meticulous planning because the user relies entirely on sequential navigation. You must maintain an unmistakable visual focus and ensure every single transition feels seamless and predictable.

Next Generation TV

Schematic were hired by a leading market research firm to create some bespoke analysis and presentation software to transform their workflows.

I helped map their existing workflows and pain points then turn that into a custom user experience based on their proprietary methodology. Researchers could upload their research interactively explore the data and create visually compelling narratives for their clients.

This project was packed with fascinating design challenges, particularly around the interactive data visualisation. My biggest takeaway was realising just how incredibly difficult building software of this scale really is. Ultimately, the project never saw the light of day because the vision simply overtook the reality of the budget.

Working with major media companies, including the Discovery Channel, I brought viewers' favourite shows to life through immersive digital experiences.

The focus was on deepening audience engagement by designing interactive web content and red-button TV apps. By blending storytelling with interactive design, we turned passive viewers into active participants, delivering content that extended the show beyond the main screen.

I cannot tell you just how much fun it was making TV programs interactive. The pace was incredibly fast and budgets were typically low, which forced us to be highly creative and scrappy. I absolutely loved coming up with the big creative concepts that brought the interactive aspects of a show to life.
